Interview: Designer Nicole Bridger

An Interview with Nicole Bridger by Mandy Candy

Nicole Bridger's one of the hautest young talents here in Vancouver. Her design is upscale and targeted towards the classic modern woman. Her clothing is eco-friendly and produced locally with sustainable fabrics. This is a result of a strong sense of purpose; positivity is one of the most important values in her brand.

Nicole went to York House in Vancouver then and went on to Ryerson University in Toronto where she achieved a degree in Fashion Design. She then received an opportunity to live in London, UK to intern for Vivienne Westwood an English fashion designer largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream

After the internship, she knew she had to learn the business side of the industry. She partnered up with the owner of Lululemon and created Oqoqo – a casual eco-clothing line where every garment produced must be at least 75% natural, organic or sustainable and they are working towards a vision that every piece created will be produced from 100% renewable resources. Impressive!

Mandy Candy: Questions & Answers, an Interview with Fashion Designer Nicole Bridger

If you had to describe the clothes you designed in one word, what would it be?

Resonating

Who and what are your inspirations?

I get inspired by painters such as Monet and Van Gogh. However, mostly I get my inspirations from what I am going through in life. The clothing I design portrays my emotions and life lessons. For example, my last fall collection is called “unconditional love.” For fall 08’ – the collection is named “surrender”

Who is your target audience?

My designs are for a particular person. She’s 35, lives a healthy lifestyle, professional, expressive, current, and daring.

Have you always known that you were going to be a fashion designer?

I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer in grade 10/11 when I was sixteen actually. My love at that time was the song of a shoe designer. I saw that you can do what you love and make money out of it. So I decided I wanted to be a fashion designer and to have my own brand.

Describe the first experience that you had closest to fashion design.

I made clothes for Barbie when I was 7 or 8.

Do your designs reflect your own style?

Yes, definitely. I wanna wear everything I make. I think it’s nice to mix things up.

If you could give one clothing advice for girls out there, what would it be?

Dress for your personality and your body. Not everybody can fit into one silhouette.

What’s the craziest thing that has happened to you?

When I went snowboarding and I went kinda out of bounds and I fell down a cliff. That was probably the craziest thing that has happened to me.

What do you think is most important in fashion?

I would have to say that you should go with your gut and to stay true to yourself.

Any New Years Resolutions?

To get in shape. I really believe in it. I also want to start morning meditations and to get outside more. I believe in having a healthy lifestyle, moving forward, and learning. I also want to open a “Nicole Bridger” store during winter [this is hush hush though ;)].

//// Thanks Nicole, luv ya!

yay! I can't wait foe springtime to show a little leg. My vote is for the skirt on the right though I'd opt for a different color perhaps. The left is a touch too sheer for my country modesty:P It looks great on the model though. Good post, and nice to hear about nicole bridger.
